The first time I decided to run the Boston Marathon was in 2003. I didn’t have any idea what I was getting myself into. But I was determined. At the time, I was under a significant amount of stress and the running relieved some of it so in the beginning, I felt great. However, the training took its toll. I had one physical problem after another until one day, after a 10-mile run, my shins began to scream at me. My physical therapist told me I could not run, but had to cross-train if I wanted to continue to pursue the marathon. So that is what I did. But I had only run 10 miles total in my training. Needless to say, when I got to the starting line, I was nervous. I didn’t know if I could actually finish the race.
One of my dear friends, who was a seasoned marathon runner, told me she would jump in half-way and run the rest of the race with me to the finish line. I promise you, I never would have made it without her. Every time I wanted to give up, she would put her hand on the small of my back so I could feel a gentle nudge moving me forward. Every time my legs cramped up, she helped massage them so I could run again. She encouraged me with words and by her mere presence beside me. And I finished the race. I crossed the finish line. It wasn’t pretty, but I did it.
